Meridian, Idaho – Sonja Lee Wilkinson Veare departed this earthly life surrounded by her daughters on Monday, February 27, 2023, in Meridian, Idaho, at the age of 75 after being afflicted by frontotemporal dementia for several years.

Sonja Lee Wilkinson Veare

She was born in Ely, Nevada, on December 21, 1947, the sixth of Frank and Mary Wilkinson’s seven children, who all preceded her in death. She grew up in McGill, Nevada, and attended White Pine High School.

After graduating, Sonja moved to Sacramento, California, where she met her husband, Eddie Veare. They were married in her hometown in October of 1967. Eddie and Sonja had been married for over 41 years when Eddie passed away in June 2009.
Sonja was the mother to four children: Joe Manuel (Sara), Sarah Maren (Dustin Whitehead), Kristin Rose (Jeramie Wheeler), and Megan Lee, who was stillborn.

In addition, she had seven grandchildren she adored and was devoted to throughout her life: Megan Veare, Phoenix Hemesi, Chloe Hemesi, Lauren Whitehead, Marin Veare, Keaton Veare, and Benjamin Whitehead. She was the bonus grandmother to Brianna, Rose, and Adam Wheeler. Before her passing, she was blessed with becoming Great-Grandmother to Megan’s daughter, Scarlett.

Sonja spent the first half of her professional life as the executive housekeeper of Sutter Hospital in Lodi, CA. After having her last two children, she decided to work closer to home. She finished her career as the bus driver and maintenance specialist for the Elverta School district before taking early retirement in 1996.

After retiring simultaneously, Sonja and Eddie moved into their beloved 5th Wheel trailer and traveled around the U.S., landing for longer periods of time wherever there were new grandchildren to dote on. After Eddie passed, Sonja continued to travel, often visiting her countless beloved nieces and nephews. She lived in Antelope, Roseville, and Citrus Heights, CA before moving to Meridian, ID for her final years.

Sonja was deeply devoted to the LDS Church, a follower of Jesus, and a beacon of light to many. She joyfully served her community throughout the years. Sonja will be long remembered for her big heart that was quick to love, how eager she was to be a helping hand, and her kind and generous spirit.

A Celebration of Life open house will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 1pm to 4pm at her daughter Sarah’s home in Roseville, CA. Please email sonjaveare47@gmail.com for more details.

Moscow, Idaho – Norma Jean Bailey passed away Tuesday, November 29 at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, Idaho with her family by her side.  She was 89 years old.

Norma was born in Colton, Washington on August 22, 1933 to Victor and Monica (Meyer) Druffel.  She was a big sister to six younger siblings.  Norma loved growing up on their farm outside Colton.  She attended Guardian Angel Catholic School for her elementary years and graduated high school from Notre Dame Academy in Colton as class valedictorian.

After graduating high school, Norma left Colton for the big city of Spokane where she attended Gonzaga University.  She majored in accounting and had many fond memories of college life.

Her accounting education at Gonzaga led to her lifelong occupation as a bookkeeper.  After leaving college, her first job was as a bookkeeper at Pullman Tractor where she met her husband, Ted, which led to a marriage that lasted 65 years and was filled with love and devotion to each other.  They welcomed three children, Christie, Doug, and Greg.

Norma and Ted moved to Moscow in 1959 to begin a business that would grow and flourish until being sold in 1992.  It started as a milk home delivery service that involved the whole family.  Norma served as the bookkeeper and even the kids were called into service when dad needed them.  They were usually compensated with an ice cream bar.  Norma and Ted worked side by side to grow a milk distribution business that covered all of north Idaho and parts of eastern Washington.  Norma continued to serve as the head bookkeeper and office manager.  Meanwhile, she also found time to serve her community by being involved in many activities including Jaycee-ettes, United Way, CampFire Girls, Moscow Bear Boosters, and St. Mary’s Parish Council.

After selling the business, Norma and Ted retired and enjoyed a life of travel in their RV. They enjoyed special times with family and many special friends.  Ted and Norma never missed a ball game that their children or grandchildren were involved in.  They also enjoyed following the Idaho Vandals and traveled to many games with friends.  Norma especially loved family time at their Lake Coeur d Alene cabin in the summer and snow-birding in Arizona during the winter.  It was a sad day for her five grandchildren when grandma was no longer able to make her renowned strawberry jam at their home south of Moscow.

Norma has resided at Good Samaritan Village for the past five years where she had some very special relationships with the staff there.  She was blessed by the care they provided her.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; parents, Vic and Monica; son, Doug; brother, Bob Druffel and baby sister, Vicki Druffel.

Norma is survived by her children, daughter, Chris (Dan), and son, Greg (Cathryn); sister, Dianne Sather, and brothers, Tom Druffel, Steve Druffel, and Art Druffel.  She has five grandchildren: Chad Lyon (Sara), Nicki Doran (Pat), Cody Bailey (Samantha), Ashley Gregor (Josh), and Sam Bailey. She also has eight great-grandchildren: Lucas Lyon, Ellie Lyon, Avery Doran, Siena Doran, Harrison Gregor, Benjamin Gregor, Hadley Bailey, and Mason Bailey.

A funeral service will be held for Norma at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 618 E 1st St., Moscow, Idaho.  A luncheon for friends and family will follow at the Parish Center next door.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Norma’s name to the Moscow Bear Boosters, P.O. Box 9724, Moscow, ID 83843 or St. Mary’s School Foundation, P.O. Box 8485, Moscow, ID 83843.

Short’s Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Moscow, Idaho – Jeannine Petersen, 87, moved from Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, right into the arms of Jesus on Friday, October 21, 2022.

Born Nova Jeannine Blaylock on August 13, 1935 in Lubbock, Texas, Jeannine was the 7th of 8 children born to Forrest and Vida (Acuff) Blaylock.

Her father passed away when she was 10 years old. Her mother gathered her younger children, packed up the car and moved to Salinas, CA in 1941. Jeannine shared many memories about life in Salinas during WWII: from the food and gas rations, her mother driving home from her laundromat  job with the lights out, hanging blankets over the windows during blackouts, and a soldier knocking on the door if it wasn’t done correctly.

But there were good memories, too. Walking to and from school with her big brother, Troy, saving enough pennies so she and her younger sister, Francine, could go to the movie shows or the rodeo, riding Nini the nice horse while Francine had to ride the mule, who, we hear, was not so nice. Jeannine and Francine created many memories while their niece, Jackie, lived with them. Only 3 years younger than Francine, the three girls were very close. Those were the good memories during the hard times and Jeannine cherished them her entire life.

Jeannine, big brother Troy and little sister Francine moved with their mother to Moscow, Idaho in 1949. Jeannine met Bernard Petersen in 1950, and they married in 1955. They lived at the Petersen family farm in the Lenville area. Jeannine settled into the farm life and worked hard for years cooking for hired men, feeding cows, gardening, canning, sewing and other farm chores. She babysat neighbor children when needed.

Jeannine and Bernard adopted daughter Debra in 1959, and daughter Dawn  in 1961.
Jeannine was a member of the Moscow Garden Club. She loved growing flowers, and she entered many arrangements in the Latah County Fair.
Before Bernard’s death in 2004, he and Jeannine spent many weekends traveling to gun shows, cruising around in their little MG, and spending time with the grandkids. After she became a widow, she went on many trips with the “Roadrunners” senior group and spent time with friends having coffee and shopping.

Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ralph, Earl, Edward and Troy, sisters Zula and Maxine.

She is survived by her sister Francine (Sam) Roos of Sandpoint, ID, daughters Debbie (Jeff) Meshishnek, Dawn (Brad) Foiles-Roach who all live on the family farm, grandchildren Chris, Lisa, Jeffrey and Jason, and four great grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service at 1 PM Friday, October 28 at the Moscow Cemetery followed by a gathering at Debbie’s home.
Donations may be made to the Genesee Ambulance Fund or The Lewiston Children’s Home.

Jeannine’s family would like to sincerely thank the caring people at Good Samaritan as well as Marie from Hospice for taking such great care of Jeannine. We are truly grateful.
